In the series Ava & Bucky, we follow 12-year-old visually impaired girl Ava and her guide dog Bucky on their daily adventures. Ava is a rebellious child who won’t be held back by her disability. Nor do her parents or brother treat her any differently to other children. Ava is funny, direct and always thinks in terms of solutions. She often eats apples when she needs to think: chewing helps her brain to work better! Thanks to her impulsive nature, she often gets herself into trouble. Ava has been blind all her life and has plenty of tools and tricks to help her cope with everyday life. What’s more, her sense of smell and hearing are extremely well developed, which means she sometimes notices things before her friends or family do. She is, however, afraid of silence because she has no idea of what’s going on around her.
Ava is popular with her peers and has many friends. But her greatest friend is her loyal guide dog, Bucky, a Border Collie. Bucky was just a puppy when he was abandoned by the roadside by his previous owner. Ava, who was a toddler at the time, found him and rescued him. Her hearing was already so well developed that she was the only
one who could hear him whining. Ava’s parents instantly welcomed Bucky into the family, and Ava and Bucky have been inseparable ever since. Over the years, they have developed a special language that no-one else understands. Whenever Bucky makes a different sound, Ava is always the first to hear it. Bucky knows exactly how to warn Ava of danger and does everything to protect his friend. He communicates in different ways – by barking, giving his paw and putting things in Ava’s hands. They are inseparable and form a rock-solid team together.
